Matthew Buckland’s client acquitted of allegation of massive tax fraud.

The allegation in this case was of a tax fraud on a massive scale. High net worth investors were induced to invest in a carbon credits scheme under the Kyoto protocol. The allegation was that the companies were all under common control and that the scheme did not have sufficient money to meet its objectives. It was also alleged that conspirators had diverted funds for their own benefit.

This case lasted for 7 years. There was extensive litigation around disclosure and the case was stayed by Mr Justice Ramsay in 2015.  The stay was overturned by the Court of Appeal (reported as R v R [2015] EWCA Crim 1941).
Defendant acquitted after hung jury and prosecution decision not to seek a retrial. In total six defendants were convicted and two acquitted.
