YOUTH JUSTICE FORUM: THE YOUTH COURT SPIRAL

Carmelite Chambers invites you to attend an evening in collaboration with Kingsley Napley and in support of the Koestler Trust’s Radio 4 Appeal.  The forum will focus on youth justice and the need for specialist advocacy for young people in the police station and in the youth court.

Solicitors and counsel will be aware that counsel attending the youth court now needs to be registered with the BSB. Whilst there is currently no regulation currently there may well soon be and for good reason; Youth benches are specially trained. In our view youth court advocates should be too.

Joanne Kane of Carmelite Chambers is working with the ICCA on a youth court advocacy paper. She contributed to the Bar Council’s Justice Week project on youth court justice. Joanne will introduce the evening by setting out the key reasons why a focus on youth justice is important and giving an insight into the current ICCA work on youth advocacy.

Sandra Paul Partner at Kingsley Napley is an expert at dealing with young people in the Criminal Justice System.  In a long career as a criminal lawyer and advocate she has always recognised the importance of youths being treated properly and the need, through advocacy to bring the attention of the prosecution and the court back to the age and maturity of the young person before them. Sandra will provide a view as to these matters in her usual inspiring way.

Marie Spenwyn of Carmelite Chambers is the lead trainer in chambers for pupils advocacy as well as being an experienced advocacy trainer at Gray’s Inn.  She has developed a particular expertise in dealing with young persons charged with the most serious offences.  Marie will provide an overview of youth court advocacy and some tips for addressing these differences.
