PRACTICE Criminal defence practice with experience in the full spectrum of offences; both as junior alone and as lead junior.
Frequently instructed in cases of fraud, drugs, serious violence, sexual crime and trademark/regulatory infringement.
Regularly instructed in post-conviction financial proceedings, such as applications for confiscation and forfeiture, challenges against such orders in both the Crown and High Courts, contested applications for ‘behaviour orders, such as ASBOs and SOPOs, and prison adjudications.
Experienced in dealing with particularly vulnerable individuals including youths and those with mental health difficulties.
NOTABLE CASES Higher Courts:
JK v R – Court of Appeal (Crim) Instructed by the Registrar in Appeal proceedings in relation to appeal by way of section 13 of the AJA 1960. R v IC – Administrative Court Application for Certificate of Inadequacy and attendant legal argument about the correct forum for the challenge of a confiscation order made in the defendant’s absence under the CJA 1988. Successful legal argument and application.
SERIOUS VIOLENCE R v TJ – Kingston CC Section 18 attack with a metal bar and subsequent section 20 attack on cell mate with a wooden chair leg. R v MW – Wood Green CC Successful defence against allegation of knife point assault in context of neighbour dispute featuring visible slash wounds. R v TW – Woolwich CC Allegation of attack by long standing victim of domestic abuse on her ex-partner with a meat cleaver. Successful half time submission. Complainant bound over to keep the peace. R v SL – Inner London CC Defending youngest individual in multi-handed attempted robbery. Acquittal. R v KR – Lewes CC Multi-handed affray/multiple count ABH. Defending youngest individual in a large group brawl outside of a nightclub.
DRUGS SUPPLY R v CA – Basildon CC Multi-handed Supply class A and possession of firearms described by Crown as ‘deals on wheels’. R v AM – Lewes CC Junior Counsel led in large scale conspiracy to supply class A drugs and its accompanying violence across the East and West Sussex area. R v AM – Southwark CC Multi-handed brothel management, controlling prostitution and class A drugs supply in Central London nightclub.
FRAUD R v JK – Croydon CC Junior alone on large scale conspiracies to defraud, handle stolen goods and to obtain property by deception after defendant absconded for over a year. Sentenced to equivalent of time spent in custody. R v PM – Manchester MS CC Multi-handed conspiracy to defraud insurance companies through staged car accidents.
SEXUAL CRIME R v SH – Woolwich CC Possession of large quantity of indecent images of children. Third conviction for offences of a similar nature. Suspended sentence order imposed. Contested SOPO application. R v SB – Exeter CC Allegation of sexual assault on cleaning staff whilst defendant on football tour. R v RB – Southwark CC Allegation of outraging public decency at film premiere of St Trinians 2.
TRADEMARK/REGULATORY R v MA – Snaresbrook CC Possession of large quantities of counterfeit DVDs in the course of a trade or business. Successful half time submission founded on legal challenge to Crown case on both the definition of ‘possession’ and possession ‘in the course of a trade or business’. R v SL – Sutton MC Trademark and Consumer Protection Regulations offences regarding counterfeit and dangerous toys. Protracted negotiations lead to no evidence being offered.
