PRACTICE AND SPECIALITIES
Extensive experience in both fraud and general crime. Fraud includes MTIC frauds, money laundering and boilerhouse frauds. General crime includes murder, major drug supplying, kidnapping and corruption. Has also appeared in many high profile death in custody inquests and inquests involving the police use of firearms. Admitted to Dubai International Financial Centre Court and appears regularly in the Grand Court and Court of Appeal in the Cayman Islands.
FRAUD CASES R v Nissa 7 week £5Million Music Industry Copywright Fraud. Said by Crown to be largest fraud on the music industry and first prosecution of a broker of CDs and DVDs.
R v Chavda Advance fee fraud and money laundering. Defendant targeted wealthy members of the Asian community with various property investment opportunities. Over half case of the case withdrawn from jury at close of Crown’s case.
R v EA Operation Euripus-said to be the largest MTIC fraud with an alleged loss of £250 million.
R v J R Operation Duma-multi handed MTIC fraud with an alleged loss of £80 million. Trial estimated to last 4 months.
R v RP Boiler room fraud after a 3 year investigation by the SFO. Allegation involves the targeting of UK investors from boiler rooms run in Spain. R v K Operation Vex-multi handed MTIC fraud due for trial in 2010/11. R v M Recently instucted in multi handed SFO boiler room fraud with alleged loss of £65 million.
GENERAL CRIME Regina v Noor Instructed on behalf of defendant charged with the shooting of 15 year old boy in his bed in Peckham with a machine pistol. National publicity at the time of shooting. Considerable reliance on cell site evidence. R v Dadson Successful defence of 20 year old charged with the shooting of alleged rival drug dealer in Kilburn. Majority of Prosecution witnesses had special measures including anonymity and voice modulation. R v Neale 8 handed contract killing in Bradford allegedly arising out of dispute over drug territory in West Yorkshire. Original jury disagreed on verdicts. 3 co defendants convicted and sentenced to 33 years each. Aquitted of Murder at re trial. R v Hussein Ali Hussein 8 handed murder involving 2 rival gangs of Somalis. Victim stabbed and kicked to death outside Camden Tube Station. R v Sandip Patel Multi handed kidnapping, Class A drug supply and money laundering involving months of observation and covert recordings. Successful application to dismiss and arguments over admissibility of evidence leading to Crown accepting very limited pleas. R v CH Defending 16 year old girl charged with murdering her partner's mother. R v Terlo Chechnyan asylum seaker aquitted of the murder and attempted murder of 2 Russians in alleged ethnic feud. R v Muhid Abdul Multi handed murder arising out of drug dispute and blackmail. R v LE One of a number of teenagers charged with murder of grandfather outside Mosque in Tooting. R v TL One of number charged with murder following shooting outside Costcutters in Brixton.
OVERSEAS Retained on behalf of Bandeo Panday former PM of Trinidad and Tobago in pending corruption trial in Port of Spain likely to start in 2011.
Numerous appearances in Grand Court and Court of Appeal in Cayman Islands.
Admitted to Dubai International Financial Centre Court and advised a number of potential defendants in Dubai. |
