Laura Brickman
CALLED 1976 Inner Temple

PRACTICE
Laura has always been first and foremost, a criminal defence practitioner. She has a ‘down-to- earth’ and sensible approach to her work and will always will give 100% commitment to her clients.

She was called to the Bar in 1976 and has undertaken family work in the past. Her criminal practice has been of the heavyweight variety. As a Senior Junior, she leads in cases of murder, attempted murder, rape, and fraud. As a member of chambers, Laura is often engaged in cases in London, however, she has travelled to the provinces to conduct defence work throughout her career.

She has always been keen to defend vulnerable defendants, enjoys the challenge of appellant work, and has frequent recommendations from previous clients.

NOTABLE CASES
R v Denton – September 2009 – Inner London Crown Court
Representing a leader of the Rainbow Hippy Movement alleged to have committed numerous rapes, sexual assaults on children. The trial involves argument concerning the admissibility of unproven rapes, and paedophile activity as bad character evidence.

R v Arnold – September 2009 – Kingston Crown Court
I represented the female manager of the Queens Composer, Sir Peter Maxwell Davis. Over a period of years, she allegedly stole over £400,000 of his earnings. She was acquitted.
The case was reported in the national press. It was a recommendation case. The solicitors having watched me in R v Quinn, see below.

R v Whyte – June 2009 – Court of Appeal
Leading Junior in the Court of Appeal with younger member of Chambers against a QC and two Juniors for the Crown. This was an appeal against W’s conviction for murder – a gangland shooting. I was not trial counsel, but was recommended by a previous client (defendant) for the appeal. The conviction was quashed

R v Menzes and others – July 2009 – Sheffield Crown Court
Representing a 16 year old, charged with the murder of a fellow gang member.

R v Widdowson and others – April 2009 – Sheffield Crown Court
Armed robbery, lorry hijacking. Representing the sole female defendant who was responsible for orchestrating and co-ordinating the various teams on the night of the hijacking. Her home was similar to a telephone exchange such were the number of calls going through it. A care-worker, aged 54, she was acquitted.

Rhys-Jones murder. R .v. Q & others. October 2008. Liverpool Crown Court. I am the leading Junior for one of the core defendants in this case involving the shooting of an 11 year old boy. This case has received nationwide publicity

R v Nathan Quinn and others – Winter 2008 – Liverpool Crown Court
Leading Junior for Q, charged with Assisting an offender x 2. The case involved the murder of Rhys Jones, and generated nationwide publicity. Q was 16 at the time of the offences, and at the time of trial, was serving a sentence of 5 years in a Y.O.I for firearms offences. I succeeded in not having the conviction admitted as evidence of bad character in the trial.
On conviction, he received a lenient sentence, following detailed written legal submissions, involving authorities and Q’s troubled background.

R v McIntyre – Autumn 2008 – Leicester Crown Court
Junior to Richard Ferguson QC.
Murder trial involving the killing of a two year old child, by his father (M) in order to prevent the child’s mother from having custody of the child. Diminished responsibility defence.

R .v. Winter & others. May 2007. Sheffield Crown Court. £6 million money laundering case involving the proceeds of sale of Class A drugs in Sheffield being sent through Western Union to Jamaica to fund exotic villa developments and high powered motor vehicle agencies.

R .v. Flavius & others. Winter 2006. Central Criminal Court. Leading Junior representing one defendant in this multi-handed racially aggravated murder of a Muslim on a west London housing estate.

R .v. Bourke & others. Autumn 2006. Central Criminal Court. Attempted murder of a wife beater. Leading Junior. I argued successfully that the defendant’s previous convictions for manslaughter and ‘Section 20’ GBH should not be admitted as evidence. The defendant, who had psychiatric problems, was acquitted.

R .v. Chaffe & other. Summer 2006. Southwark Crown Court. Leading Junior in murder case, representing a rape victim aged 19 who killed a drug dealer. She had previous convictions for GBH & drugs offences, and had been in care.

R .v. Piggins. October 2006. Central Criminal Court. I was leading counsel in the largest and most serious case of racial hatred ever heard in England. This case involved the resurrection & publishing of ‘Der Stormer’, a Nazi magazine published in Germany in the 1940’s. My defendant, the only female, was allegedly responsible, as the editor of the magazine, which included articles about bomb making. Due to my work pre-trial, the prosecution were ultimately compelled to offer no evidence against the defendant, while the co-defendants received sentences of up to 6 years imprisonment. My client, Mrs Hunt, was responsible for the Racial Volunteer Force, a new right wing extremist group, based on Combat 18. She kept Klu Klux Klan dolls, and Nazi memorabilia was displayed at her home, together with photographs of her performing a Nazi salute. Although she knew my religion, the defendant was happy to be represented by me, and with the result.

R .v. Hatton. 2004. Sheffield Crown Court, and Court of Appeal. This case raised important points of law in relation to the defence of murder.

R .v. H. 2003. Court of Appeal. Severely learning disabled man, charged with rape and indecent assault on two learning disabled women. Special measures authority which opened the door for the learning disabled in English courts. Acted alone in Court of Appeal, leading counsel at trial.

R .v. Camp & Others. 2001. Southwark Crown Court. Leading counsel in £2 million United Synagogue fraud by employees. My argument on abuse of process resulted in a 3 month trial which had gone 2 months being stayed for abuse of process.
