Carmelite Chambers is one of a few well-established leading exclusively criminal defence sets. There currently are 65 tenants including eight Queen’s Counsel. Chambers has recently relocated to a beautifully modernised building situated overlooking the Thames.

‘As a testament to its confidence in its own future this chambers has invested in its own property and commentators were unanimous in praising its progress’
(Chambers and Partners 2008).

Members of Chambers have been instructed in most of the high profile cases in the last ten years including the current spate of terrorist cases and the Iraqi courts martial. Chambers has considerable expertise in high-profile cases involving murder, terrorism, corporate manslaughter, police corruption, drug trafficking, sexual offences and has increasingly specialised in commercial fraud and international money laundering.

‘Carmelite Chambers maintains an excellent reputation for mainstream criminal work and high-profile cases’
(Legal 500 2007).

Pupillages detail: 2-3 12 month pupillages with possible extension to third six
Funding: Twelve-month pupils will be funded through a combination of an award scheme and guaranteed earnings. We would expect earnings in the second six to exceed the guaranteed minimum. Chambers will pay for all compulsory training courses.
Apply: Through OLPAS Summer

Carmelite Chambers selects pupils who demonstrate a genuine interest in criminal defence work. We are looking for individuals who are highly-motivated and demonstrate sound judgement.

Pupillage programme.
Chambers normally offers 2-3 12-month pupillages with the possibility of an extension to third six. Each pupil will have four supervisors during the twelve-months for a period of three months each in order to ensure maximum exposure to different types of work and advocacy style.

Throughout pupillage, chambers provides weekly in-house advocacy training which is hoped provides our pupils with the necessary skills to survive in their early days in Court. Chambers also offers 24-hour support and guidance if and when the need arises.

During their first six months our pupils will experience a wide range Court work from high-profile and complex cases in the Crown Court to simpler matters before the Magistrates. Once on their feet they should expect to be extremely busy and will be instructed to conduct court work including trials in both the Magistrates’ and the Crown Court. Pupils’ income would be expected to exceed the guaranteed award.

We aim to give pupils all of the knowledge, skills and practical experience that will equip them for a successful career at the bar. All pupils are fully involved in the life of Carmelite Chambers during their time with us.
